Lincoln Movie Review

Lincoln is an American movie produced in 2012.Steven Spielberg produced and directed the movie. Starring is the United States 17th century president, Abraham Lincoln, Daniel Day-Lewis. Sally Field acts as Mary Told Lincoln. The movie is based on KearnsGodwin’s biography, which is a socio-political biography of Abraham Lincoln. The film critically analyses the Lincoln’s life during the last four months of his life. It focuses on Lincoln’s efforts during 1865 in order to have the House of Representatives pass the Thirteen Amendment of the US constitution to preserve rights and freedom. Daniel Day-Levis plays as Abraham Lincoln, the president of the US. Sarry Field stars as Mary Lincoln; Tommy Jones plays as Thaddeus Stevens; the action of Lee Pace as Fernando wood is strong; James Spader, Lincoln’s Democratic operative, is very entertaining throughout the movie.
Efforts of PresidentAbraham Lincoln of January 1865 to obtain the Thirteen Amendment of the US constitution are recounted by the film Lincoln. The amendment was formally to abolish slavery in United States. Lincoln feared to read the Emancipation Proclamation during the civil war and waited since courts could have discarded the move. Subsequently, the 13th amendment was abandoned for some time until the returning salve states took part in voting for the amendment. This strengthens his desire to ensure that the amendment was passed by the end of January, ensuring that the slaves that were already freed could never be enslaved again. The Republicans did not wholly support the amendment and a few of them are concerned on ending the civil war only. For the amendment to pass, it will require support from several democrats, with many of them having lost their re-election campaigns of 1864. Lincoln proposes that the amendment should have been passed before the war ended and before the states from the south were readmitted to the Union.
Sally Field shows a lot of vigor, concern, neurosis as a mother who has already lost a son, her son, Joseph Gordon-Levitt is eager to enlist, and her husband is forced to change his human behavior to lead United States. David Strathairn, who plays as secretary of sates William Seward is always wrapped in smoke from smoking cigar.
James Spader is a lobbyist who is called by Seward to help amass votes to help the 13th Amendment to go through. John Hawkes acting as Robert Lathan and spader, who carry more seriousness than we are used of him, provide a view of background process as a battle is waged in the House of Representatives. Lee Pace spearheads democrats, while Lee Jones delivers a stellar (as Stevens Thaddeus) performance. Stevens is a quick-tempered republican representative from Pennsylvania who spends much of his political career battling slavery. Stevens wears his emotions on his sleeve. At the end, Stevens offers the most arousing moment of the entire feature.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt, the president’s son, could have been cut entirely from the scene. Spielberg likes playing up son-father drama in his features. However, his feature does not add much to the story and in fact slows it down at times.
Francis Preston Blair, the founder of the Republican Party, is the only person Lincoln can rely on to influence all the members of the border state and western conservativerepublican faction to back the amendment. Blair is determined to end the hostility by the time the war ends. He asks for a favor for supporting Lincoln, that he be allowed to engage the confederate government in the ongoing peace negotiations.
The film shifts forward by two months after the passage of the amendment, portraying the visit of Lincoln to the battlefield to find out about the progress of the civil war from General Grant. Grant receives the General’s Lee surrender shortly thereafter at Appomattox Courthouse. Lincoln’s hard work is discusses when he holds a night cabinet meeting in April 14, 1865, to discuss about measures to enfranchise the black Americans. During the meeting, Mrs. Lincoln comes to take them to Fords Theatre. That same night, president is short to dead.
Lincoln is a wonderful film that is filled with passion. Spielberg and the entire film team do not set out to print a perfect man, but a man that strove to make US a better country. These presentations make watching the film enjoyable. The US 16th present is not made to look like a Hero, but a president who tried to achieve great through the opportunities he got.

The chaos theory as applied to electrical drive systems.

As various pockets of study over time may suggest, all electric systems exhibit chaotic events and these lead to losses of energy, thus inefficiency of the drive system. Chau and Wang oversee the systematic introduction of the chaotic theory to electrical engineering in a very real and practical manner that is likely to leave even those with only basic knowledge regarding electrical drive systems aware of how the complex chaotic theory interlinks with this field. The chaos theory is a relatively new field in engineering and this article is a review of the books, which undertakes to the application of chaos theory to electrical drive systems. The main focus this paper is demonstrate the authors’ disposition on identifying what chaos is, finding out how it occurs, and eventually its effect in electric drive systems, and is presented in the form of a review of the book Chaos in Electric Drive Systems: Analysis, Control, and Application authored by Chau and Wang.
The book opens with a quaint introduction that brings the author to speed on the origin of the idea of chaos. The reader goes through a journey of historic wealth on the etymology of the word chaos. The first postulate put forward describes the origin story that the Greek subscribe to. The original deity, Chaos, was the foundation of creation and was responsible for bringing forth the mother of the earth, otherwise known as Gaea. The predecessors of the relatively modern Greek gods, the Titans, then followed this event. The authors also highlight the etymology of the word chaos from the Chinese tradition. There is also mention of other existing myths regarding chaos and this serves the purpose of giving the reader an idea of how much the theory of chaos transcends even the most basic of human differences.
Amidst all these theories, the authors agree that there is no clear-cut way to define chaos. Instead, they list a number of features that can lead one to conclude the occurrence of an event as chaotic. They list; non-linearity and they say that chaos cannot occur in a linear system. The very nature of chaos simply fails to agree with the concept of linearity, instead, it evokes a picture of more unorganized occurrences, and however, this is not a sufficient quality to limit an event to being chaotic since all natural systems exhibit non-linearity. That is why they include determinism. Under this, they say that chaos must follow one or more deterministic equations that do not contain any random variables. (Chau & Wang, p. 4). In order to support this claim they further suggest that system state, be they past, present or future are subject to deterministic and probabilistic, underlying rules, and that the boundary between deterministic and probabilistic is somewhat unclear. The next feature they highlight is the sensitive dependence on initial conditions. In this case, the initial state very much determines the outcome of the final state. Consequently, even a small change in the former, can result in events that are so divergent that it is clearly not easy to relate them to a clear set of initial conditions. Finally, chaotic orbits exhibit a periodicity; however, not all aperiodic orbits are chaotic.
The authors have divided the book into several parts and chapters. The authors take considerable time to illustrate the main thematic content of each part of the book. This is done in the form of a convenient list that enables the reader to make a quick mind map in the event they want to take a guided journey into the world of chaotic occurrences in electric drive machines.
The book then goes ahead to illustrate the development of the field of chaology. According to them, chaology is the study of the chaos theory and of chaotic systems as well. It originated as a study of mathematics and physics but has recently branched into other fields of science including biology. However, they give the theoretical advent of the actualization of the chaos theory as spelt out in a book published in the year 1903, citing the works of one Poincare. The book displays an extract of what is considered as the first most accurate description of the chaos theory (Chau & Wang, p. 7).
What follows is a detailed description of the rediscovery of the chaotic theory by Lorenz, which was a follow up of the postulate brought forward by Poincare, and later developed by Benoit B. Mandelbrot. The latter, however was responsible for a very significant step in the development of the science of archaeology, in that he single-handedly created the laws of fractal geometry that are critical to a basic understanding of the laws of chaos.

(Chau & Wang, p. 7)
At this point, it is worth noting, that for the purpose of reviewing this book as an undergraduate electrical engineering student, the author subscribes a read through of the parts I, II, and IV.
Having very succinctly and carefully introduced the unbiased theory of chaos not specified to any field, but chaos as is applied in the general study of systems. The book brings in the idea of chaos in electrical circuits (Chau & Wang, p. 9). Under this subtopic, the study of chaos falls under several levels of categorization. According to the works by Guan (2012), it is possible to group electronic circuits’ chaos into one-dimensional or higher-dimensional circuits with regard to mapping contexts, circuits exhibiting autonomy in either continuous-time or non-autonomy circuits. The authors go to some brief extent to explain the differences between the various types of circuits as described by Van Wyk and Steeb, and go as far as giving examples commonly found in the field of electronic engineering.
Being fueled by the advancement of mechatronic design and control strategies, there have been tremendous developments in compaction technology. Modern compaction equipment should be not only powerful, economical, and versatile, but also environmental friendly. A compactor functions to provide a vibratory compressive stress onto soil, granulates, or powders so that the required densities can be attained. This vibratory compressive stress is due to the centrifugal force of a rotating eccentric mass, which can be driven by an electric motor or an internal combustion engine. It should be noted that the electric compactor takes the definite advantages of no smelly gas, quiet operation, and free maintenance over its engine-powered counterpart. It therefore arises that the occurrence of chaotic events in electric drive systems is a common and not much is known regarding them. Consequently many electric drive systems fall into performance brackets below their intended use. In a world where every iota of energy is precious and cannot afford to go to waste, it is mandatory to modify the drive systems we use to reduce energy losses by as much as possible. One way that is sure to meet this goal is the reduction of chaotic occurrences and the resultant bifurcations to their minimum occurrence.
